Your first recording

  1. Install. Get FlowCap from the Mac App Store and open it.
  2. Choose what to record. Pick a screen, window, area inside a window, or app, and choose your sound.
  3. Allow access when macOS asks. Screen & System Audio Recording is required. Microphone access is needed only for your voice.
  4. Start, then stop. When you stop, your clip is saved and appears in Recordings.

Common questions

What permissions do I need?

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording and allow the installed FlowCap app. Quit and reopen if macOS asks. Microphone permission is needed only for Mic or System + Mic.

How do I reach FlowCap in full screen or a game?

Keep FlowCap running, then use its keyboard shortcut: Control + Shift + R by default. If it conflicts with another app, use the shortcut shown in FlowCap. You can also reopen FlowCap from Applications or switch to it with Command + Tab. Some full-screen apps and games may behave differently.

Where are my clips, and how do I trim them?

The default destination is the FlowCap folder in Movies; you can choose another location. Open a clip in Recordings, use Finder to locate it, and choose the part to keep in Trim. FlowCap saves a separate trimmed MP4 and leaves your original recording unchanged.

Why do I hear doubled audio?

Speaker output can be picked up again by the microphone. Try headphones and a short recording, then adjust levels in Sound. FlowCap does not promise automatic echo cancellation.

How do I balance color, clarity, and file size?

Start with Balanced quality. Keep enough resolution for the text and detail you need to show. Try HEVC for efficient encoding, or H.264 for broader playback compatibility. Use Vivid for a bright look, True Color (P3) for design and wide-color work, or Standard (709) for common playback environments. Check the saved file in your intended player; motion, display settings, and platform re-encoding can affect the result. Smaller is not automatically better, and compression is not lossless.

Recording will not start on Intel. What next?

Confirm macOS 15 or later and screen recording permission. Try H.264 and HEVC separately. Send your Mac model, codec, and error text to support. Do not disable macOS security protections.

What is included for free?

All recording and editing features in the current release are free, with no recording time limit or account required. Future releases may introduce optional paid features; this release does not require a purchase or subscription.

Include app version/build, Mac model, macOS version, capture target, audio mode, codec, and reproduction steps. Do not attach private recordings; remove sensitive information from any sample you choose to share.
